How do I troubleshoot UMD problems on the PSP system?

UMD Games and/or UMD Movies Do Not Load or Play on the PSP system
Confirm the PSP system Software Version

Make sure you have the latest PSP system software update installed.  The system software update may include security patches, new or revised settings and features, and other items which will change your current operating system.

If you would like to check the current version installed on your PSP system, follow these steps.

  1. Go to Settings on the PSP Home Menu.
  2. Select the [Network Update] option.  Press the X button.
  3. Select the appropriate Wireless network connection to connect the PSP system to the Internet.  Press the X button.

The system will look for the latest version of the system software from our servers.  If you already have the most recent version installed, you will not need to perform an update.  If you have an older version of the system software, it will prompt you to download the update file.

Confirm the Region Code of the UMD

Check the region code on the UMD.

Restore Default Settings on the PSP system

During certain troubleshooting situations, it may be necessary to restore all of the PSP system settings back to their original default configuration.

The Restore Default Settings feature will restore all of the following settings (and erase any previously saved settings):

  • Music Settings
  • Chat Settings
  • System Settings
  • Date and Time Settings
  • Accessory Settings
  • Display Settings
  • Sound Settings
  • Security Settings
  • Network Settings
  • Internet Browser Settings

Restore Default Settings Procedure

1.  From the PS3 Home Menu, go to Settings > [System Settings] > [Restore Default Settings].

2.  Once you select Restore Default Settings, you will see a list of settings that will be restored.  Scroll through them and press the X button to restore the settings.

Check for Unauthorized Firmware Use

Confirm that you have not used any unauthorised system software updates (downloads) on the PSP system.  Use of such unauthorised system software updates voids the warranty and can damage the PSP system.

Check for Unlicensed Product Use

All licensed products for use with the PSP will have the SCE Company logos displayed directly on the product and/or the packaging:

If any of the products you are using does not have SCE company logos on them1 we recommend that you immediately discontinue the use of these products, as they void the PSP system's warranty, and can cause damage to the system.

UMD Trouble shooting
  • Make sure the UMD is properly inserted with the label facing the back of the PSP system.  Try removing the UMD and reinserting it.

  • Try playing the UMD on a different PSP system.  If the UMD plays, the original PSP system may be the problem.  If the UMD does not play, the problem may be isolated to the UMD itself.

  • Try playing a different UMD on the PSP system.  If another UMD plays, the original UMD may be the problem.  If none of the UMDs play, the problem may be isolated to the PSP system.

  • Make sure the exposed UMD surface and plastic casing is not damaged2.  Do not use if plastic casing is cracked, collapsed, or if foreign materials have entered inside the UMD enclosure.
Check for Moisture Condensation

Check for moisture condensation.  If the PSP system is brought directly from a cold location to a warm one, moisture may condense on the inside of the window.  Should this occur, turn off and unplug the system, remove any UMD from the PSP system, and let the system stand at room temperature with the UMD tray open until the moisture evaporates (this may take several hours).

Footnotes

1   There are some products that can be used with the PSP system that may not display our logos.  Products such as SanDisk 1GB Memory Sticks, or various USB cables, needs only to be genuinely certified.  Look for the genuine certified logos on these products or contact the company which manufactures these products for more information.

If the UMD is physically damaged, do not attempt to use.  Contact the publisher of the UMD directly for further assistance.  Alternatively, please return to the retailer.
