System Update Method

【 Please use only the proper update data.】
Do not perform updates using any data other than the official update data provided by Sony Computer Entertainment over a network or on disc media, and do not perform updates by methods other than those described in the product documentation or in this site. If an update is performed using data from another source, by another method, or with a PSP system that has been altered or modified in any way, the PSP system may not operate properly and may not be able to install the official update data. Any of these actions may void the PSP system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Computer Entertainment.
【 Attention customers using PSP® firmware versions 1.52 and below:】
There have been reported instances where the firmware update 1.52 will fail when using the wireless LAN built in the PSP®.
For those who are experiencing this type of failure, please try one of the following update methods:
Update via PS3™
Update via PC
To use the network update, you must first update the firmware to 2.00 or above using a UMD™ disk.
We encourage you to check this page from time to time for software updates and to always maintain your system to use the latest version of the system software.

You can update the PSP® system software by any of the following methods.

Update using the PSP® system's System Update feature.
Download update data using a PC and save on storage media or a USB Mass Storage device. Copy the update data to the Memory Stick™ media or system storage and perform the update.
Use the update data included on a UMD™ to perform the update. [Only for PSP-1000/2000/3000 series]
 
 

System Update

Required items

  • A PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system with battery pack and AC adaptor
  • One of the following save destinations media with at least 28MB of free space.
    • Memory Stick™ media [Only for PSP-1000/2000/3000 series]
    • System Storage [Only for PSP-N1000 series]
  • Internet access using a wireless LAN (Hotspots that require a browser for authentication cannot be used.)
    • Internet service with an ISP (Internet service provider)
    • A network device, such as a DSL/cable modem and a WLAN access point
    • Setting information for the access point (SSID and WEP key)
      • Before performing a network update, you must create network settings for your PSP® system. For details, refer to the PSP® system instruction manual.
      • A WLAN access point is a device used to connect to a wireless network.
      • SSID and WEP keys are types of wireless network information. This information is generally set in the access point using a PC. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the access point.
 


Update procedure

  • Do not remove the AC adaptor during the update.
  • Do not turn off the system or remove the Memory Stick Duo™ media during the update. If an update is canceled before completion, the system software may be damaged, requiring servicing to repair or exchange.

  • Do not turn off the system or remove the Memory Stick Duo™ media during the download.

Notice Before starting the update, you must do the following:

  • Check that the battery is fully charged.
  • Connect the AC adaptor to the PSP® system and plug it into an electrical outlet.
  • Turn on the PSP® system's WLAN switch or WIRELESS switch.



1. Select
(System Update) under from the home menu, and then press the O button.



2. Select [Update via Internet].



3. Select a connection, and then press the O button.
If you have not created and saved a connection, no connections will be displayed. In this case, select "New   Connection" and enter the necessary network settings. For details, refer to the PSP® system instruction manual.



4. Connect to the network.
When a network connection is established, the system will check whether an update is needed.



5. Download the update data.
If a screen prompting you to update the system software is displayed, you must perform an update. Press the O button. The download will begin.

Notice

  • Do not remove the AC adaptor during the download.
  • Do not turn off the system or remove the Memory Stick Duo™ media during the download.

 



6. Update the system software.
Follow the on-screen instructions to start the update. The version number of the update data is displayed and the update begins.

Do not turn off the system or remove the Memory Stick™ media during the update. If an update is canceled before completion, the system software may be damaged, requiring servicing to repair or exchange.

7. Confirm that the update was successful.
After the update has completed, select “System Settings” under (Settings) from the home menu, and then select “System Information”. If the System Software field displays the version number of the update, the update was successful.

  •  After the update has successfully completed, you can delete the update data from the Memory Stick™ media or system storage.

Update using a PC

Required items

  • A PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system with battery pack and AC adaptor
  • One of the following save destinations with at least 28MB of free space
    • Memory Stick™ media [Only for PSP-1000/2000/3000 series]
    • System Storage [Only for PSP-N1000 series]
  • Internet access
  • One of the following:
    • A commercially available USB A<-> Mini-B (5-pin) cable
    • A commercially available Memory Stick USB Reader/Writer*
    • A PC equipped with a Memory Stick slot*
* If the slot on the device can handle only standard-size Memory Stick™ media, a Memory Stick Duo Adaptor (model number MSAC-M2; a Sony product sold separately) is required.

 

Update data download procedure

1. Prepare to save the update data on Memory Stick™ media or to the system storage using one of the following methods:

  • Use a USB cable to connect a PC and a PSP™ system. To copy update data to Memory Stick™ media, insert Memory Stick™ media into the system.
  • Connect a commercially available Memory Stick USB Reader/Writer to the PC
  • Use the Memory Stick slot on the PC

 

2. Create a folder for the update data on the Memory Stick™ media or in the system storage.



Using your PC, create a folder named "PSP" on the Memory Stick™ media or in the system storage. Within the "PSP" folder, create a folder named "GAME". Within the "GAME" folder, create a folder named "UPDATE" ( This folder name IS case sensitive. The folder name must appear in all capital letters ).

3. Download the update data and save it in the "UPDATE" folder created in step 2.

1. If the update data is saved on Memory Stick™ media, insert Memory Stick™ media into the system.

2. Start the update data.
Select [Memory Stick™] or [System Storage] under (Game) from the home menu, and then select (PSP® Update). Press the O button to start the update. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform the update.

Notice
During the update:

  • Do not remove the AC adaptor during the update.
  • Do not turn off the system or remove the Memory Stick™ media during the update.

If an update is canceled before completion, the system software may be damaged, requiring servicing to repair or exchange.

3. Confirm that the update was successful.
After the update has completed, select “System Settings” under 
(Settings) from the home menu, and then select “System Information”. If the System Software field displays the version number of the update, the update was successful.

  • After the update has successfully completed, you can delete the update data from the Memory Stick™ media or the system storage.

Update using disc media [Only for PSP-1000/2000/3000 series]

Required items

If a screen prompting you to update the system software is displayed when you start a UMD™, you must perform an update to start the software title contained on the UMD™. In this case you can update directly from the UMD™.

Notice
The update data contained in the software exclusively for the PSP® system (UMD™) is the latest version available at the time of the software release. A later version of the update data may be available after the software release.

Required items

  • A PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system with battery pack and AC adaptor
  • A UMD™ containing update data*

* When you insert a UMD™ containing update data in the system, the following icon is displayed in the home menu.
 

Update procedure

2. Start the update data.
Select  (PSP® Update), and then press the O button to start the update.
