Destiny 2 Guide: Decisions, Decisions... Choosing Class and Race

Create a Character All Your Own!

When playing Destiny 2 for the first time, you'll be prompted to select a class.
After that, choose a race, gender, and face to complete your very own Guardian alter-ego. Now you're ready to begin your adventure!
Once you've created a Guardian, its class and appearance are no longer editable. Customize your character however you like!
Up to three Guardians can be saved. To create more, you will need to delete an existing one.
So try to make Guardians that you're fully satisfied with.
Let's break down the particulars of class and race, shall we?
Race and gender have zero bearing on stats. Meaning this is your chance to get creative!

Class forms the very foundation of your Guardian. There are three classes in total, each with drastically different fighting styles.
As you progress through the game, three subclasses per class will become available, further diversifying the way you can play. But for now, let's focus on the three main classes.

War's greatest spoils are honor and hope.
The Titan towers on the front lines, ready to engage the enemy in a head-on test of brute strength.
Crushing foes with vicious tackles and hammer strikes eliminates the need for complicated battle tactics.

The Titan's class ability is Barricade.

This technique plants a forward-facing energy shield that absorbs enemy attacks.
As you progress on your adventure, three subclasses will be unlocked: Sentinel, Striker, and Sunbreaker.

The old world has fallen into decline. Rife with danger, it is like a savage beast, baring fangs of rust and ruination. The fate of such a creature can go but one of two ways: be tamed...or destroyed.
A Hunter cuts through the battlefield, driven by fierce desire, for the allure of reward far outweighs any mortal risk...
Lightning-quick attacks and gunplay ensure no prey escapes.

The Hunter's class ability is Dodge.
Darting outside the enemy's field of vision, the Hunter can instantly close distance or slip behind for a quick kill.
As you progress on your adventure, three subclasses will be unlocked: Arcstrider, Gunslinger, and Nightstalker.

Sometimes curiosity can open new paths to power. Dark power...

This class wields arcane energies capable of influencing the tide of battle.
Both warrior and researcher, this hybrid stance has imbued the Warlock with a powerful mystical arsenal.

The Warlock's class ability is Rift.
The technique summons a spring of light, amplifying the power of allies.
As you progress on your adventure, three subclasses will be unlocked: Dawnblade, Voidwalker, and Stormcaller.

Including Humans, the Destiny universe features three races which have banded together to fight a common threat.

This was our world, our solar system. We were here first. And no matter what the Darkness may bring, we intend to stay.
Hardy, with an affinity for adapting, humanity's ancestors realized a golden age, one that was brought to an end by the Collapse. Still, the Human race endured, and continues to do so today.

NPC Ally: Ikora Rey
Vanguard of the warrior-mystics known as Warlocks.
Years of trials have endowed her with a wealth of knowledge and a calm air befitting a seasoned warrior. These traits make Ikora an exemplary leader and advisor, duties synonymous with her position as Vanguard.

The others sing this song of Light and Dark. We, together, have transcended such unimaginative limitations.
The Awoken are thought to be the descendants of Humans who fled to the edges of space following the apocalyptic Collapse that ended the Golden Age. Within the depths of the black void, something changed them forever.

NPC Ally: Commander Zavala
Vanguard of the Titans, a class which prides itself on brute force and defense. Zavala commands the entire Vanguard faction.
Never one to shy away from hard decisions, Zavala lives by the pillars of honor and duty. With each battle, the price for victory grows greater. And though his sacrifices are great, he still fights on.

Ask yourself: what threatened your Golden Age ancestors so much that they invented the Exos to defend themselves?
Built to be weapons, the Exos are self-aware machines with a mind-bogglingly intricate internal design. Their origins are shrouded in mystery—a mystery not even the Exos themselves can crack. Where did they come from, and for what purpose? Such details have become obscured in the fog of time...

NPC Ally: Cayde-6
Vanguard of the Hunters, a class which wields both gun and blade to fell their prey.
Cayde-6 was a Hunter with a fast ship and slick gun skills to match. Much to his regret, however, a lost bet upturned his situation. Now he serves as Vanguard in place of his late friend Andal Brask, providing oversight to his scattered allies.
